Terminology: In order to emphasize the Jewish nature of the apostolic canon and its central figure I use the terms Tanakh (Old Testament), Besekh (New Testament), Torah (Law), Yeshua (Jesus), and Messiah (Christ).

Below are 60 names included in lists of the Seventy messengers appointed by Yeshua (Luke 10:1). All were actively engaged in Kingdom work. Many were personal co-workers with Paul and in some cases served as host to him. Almost all eventually were given significant leadership responsibility in the Body of Messiah. The names were first compiled by Hippolytus, Bishop of Rome (170-236) in his monograph On the Seventy Apostles, and then by Dorotheus, Bishop of Tyre (c. 255-362), Acts of the Seventy Apostles. Epiphanius, Bishop of Salamis (310-403) lists some names in his work Panarion (I, 4:3).

A list of apostles and disciples was also prepared in Pseudo-Irenaeus (A.D. 177), Pseudo-Epiphanius (8th c.), and the Book of the Bee (13th c.). The patristic lists contain some mistakes, such as three mentions of Mark and two of Aristarchus, treating "Silas" and "Silvanus" as separate individuals, confusing the mention of Caesar in Philippians 4:22, identifying "Cephas" in Galatians 2 as someone different than Peter, and including a name not found in the Besekh ("Rhodion").
