Terminology: In order to emphasize the Jewish nature of the apostolic canon and its central figure I use the terms Tanakh (Old Testament), Besekh (New Testament), Torah (Law), Yeshua (Jesus), and Messiah (Christ).

These are questions on the biblical text of Hebrews 1. These questions are provided to stimulate thoughtful analysis with the goal of understanding the text. Consideration should also be given to how the text has application in real life. This document is available without charge and may be freely copied for group use.

 

Title: Note the letter is addressed to the "Hebrews." Who were the Hebrew people? What does the title tell you about the recipients of the letter.

1:1. To whom did God speak before the first century? How did God speak to those men? Why would God choose to speak to people differently in different ways?

1:2. What is meant by the term "last days?" Through whom did God speak in the author's time? Note the two facts said of the Son. What does it mean that the Son was appointed heir of all things? What does it mean that the Son made the universe?

1:3. Note the five facts declared about the Son. What does it mean that the Son is the radiance of the glory? is the exact representation of His nature? upholds all things by the word of his power? made purification of sins? sat down at the right hand of God? So, why is the Son (Jesus) so important? What does the Son do for you?

1:4. How is the Son compared to angels? What does it mean that the Son has a more excellent name?

1:5. What question does the author ask? What two Scripture passages are quoted? What difference is there between the angels and Jesus?

1:6. What Scripture is quoted? What's the significance of being the firstborn? Who must the angels of God worship? Why should the angels worship him?

1:7. What Scripture is quoted? What does this verse say about angels? What do we know about the creation of angels?

1:8. What Scripture is quoted? What does this passage say about the Son? What does this verse say about the kingdom of Jesus?

1:9. What Scripture is quoted? What's the point? Why did God choose the Son? What has God done for Jesus?

1:10. What Scripture is quoted? What's the point? What does God call the Son? What did the Son do?

1:11. What Scripture is quoted? What will change? What will stay the same for ever?

1:12. What Scripture is quoted? What is special about the Son?

1:13. What Scripture is quoted? What will happen to God’s enemies?

1:14. For whom have the angels been sent forth to minister? Have you ever felt that an angel helped you?
